The Japanese have found their Ikigai, meaning the happiness of always being busy. And that’s what extends their lifeline. According to the World Population Review, an average Japanese person lives up to 84.8 years. That is nearly 15 years longer than an average Indian citizen, whose life expectancy typically revolves around 70.4. Japanese people have unlocked the key to happiness and a more satisfied life as they strive to eat, move, rest, and nurture balance every day.

What Principles of Life Do the Japanese Follow?

  • They don’t retire.
  • They accept negative feelings.
  • They preserve emotions like the weather. You cannot predict or control them; you can just observe them.
  • They do what they should be doing.
  • They accept the symptoms of everything that is happening in and around them.
  • They discover their purpose in life and don’t create it.
  • They have learnt to turn off their autopilot, which steers them in an endless loop.
  • They go with the flow and have a clear objective.
  • They concentrate on single tasks for better outcomes.
  • They focus on enjoying rituals because human beings are ritualistic beings. Daily rituals are the tools to enter into a state of flow.
  • They are prepared for pleasures to disappear. They don’t let them take control of life.
  • They visualize the negatives.
  • They know what they can control and what they can’t. This helps them to resist negative emotions. They believe that it is not what happens to you but how you react.

Why Japanese Citizens Live Longer Than the Rest?

Mindful Meals: By cooking meals, they prefer water over oil. Fresh fish, seaweed, tofu, rice, and fermented foods dominate their plates.

Stopping Early: Japanese citizens eat slowly, until they are 80 percent full. They listen to their bodies and stop as soon as they are satisfied.

Physical Activities: Movement is their way of life. Walking to work or cycling to markets is how they keep fatigue, illness, and early aging at bay.

Early Dining: In Japan, dinner is typically served early in the evening and is kept light for quick and easier digestion.

Atomic Habits: They never chase years or run behind time. Instead, they build small habits and follow them religiously. They nourish their bodies, minds, as well as spirits. The minute acts that they carry out daily act as a safeguard, thereby extending their story of life.

That’s all, folks! The Japanese are dropping some major cues to live a long and happy life. How are you planning to alter your lifestyle for the better?
