Bengaluru auto-rickshaw fares increase after four-year gap
New Delhi: Bengaluru’s auto-rickshaw commuters will face a 20% fare hike effective August 1st, 2024, marking the first increase in almost four years. The District Transport Authority (DTA) justified the decision, citing persistent demands from driver unions and the city’s ban on bike taxis implemented on June 16th. The ban, initially met with hesitation due to the competitive landscape, ultimately led to the fare adjustment.
The revised fare structure significantly impacts commuters. The base fare has increased from ₹30 to ₹36 for the first two kilometres, and the per-kilometre charge has risen from Rs 15 to Rs 18. Adding to the increased cost, night-time fares (between 10 pm and 5 am) will now be 1.5 times the standard rate. This increase is likely to affect numerous working individuals who rely on auto-rickshaws for late-night commutes.
The DTA’s decision comes after a comprehensive review by a five-member committee that considered various factors such as city traffic conditions, fluctuating fuel prices, and input from stakeholders, including driver unions and commuters. While the unions advocated for a more substantial increase, proposing a base fare of Rs 40 and a per-kilometre charge of ₹20, the DTA ultimately approved a 20% hike.
