Delhi Demolition Drive Turns Violent Near Faiz Elahi Mosque, Leaving Five Cops Injured
Delhi Demolition Drive: In Delhi’s Turkman Gate area, the situation turned violent on early Wednesday as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) conducted a demolition drive. The demolition drive was carried out around the Faiz Elahi Mosque. Around 1 a.m., at least 30 bulldozers rolled up in the densely populated neighbourhood with heavy police security to remove structures identified by MCD as encroachments beyond a 0.195-acre land area. Even the mosque and an adjoining dargah were included in the demolition.

However, the situation escalated when locals became enraged and began throwing stones at the police and civic teams. It led to major chaos as the situation went out of control in the narrow lanes of Turkman Gate. Locals’ stone-pelting resulted in injuries to at least five police personnel. The officials immediately took measures and used mild tear gas to restore order.
From the five police officers, one of them was the Station House Officer of the area who sustained injuries in the stone-pelting. The cops were taken to a nearby hospital and are already discharged. So far, the cops have detained at least 10 individuals and are looking for others who cause the violence. They are monitoring CCTV footage and witness statements to carry out the investigation.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range) Madhur Verma stated that the delimitation was carried out under the order of Delhi High Court’s directions. On Tuesday, the court refused to grant any interim relief to the mosque’s managing committee, which asked to halt the demolition and protect the graveyard adjacent to the Faiz-e-Illahi mosque. The committee had no issues with illegal structures getting removed. However, they wanted the graveyard in the 0.195-acre limit to not be destroyed.

On Wednesday, a baraat ghar and a dispensary in front of the location were torn down. However, the managing committee itself claimed that the mosque, listed as a Waqf property and a century old, was untouched.
The Delhi police got the situation under control by dawn, although there is still tension lingering in the neighbourhood. Authorities are continuing to monitor the area to prevent further disturbances.
