For the last few hours, all eyes were on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Following mounting pressure from within the Labour Party, he resigned from the position on Monday. While giving a speech, he announced that he is stepping down from the PM post and also mentioned that he will remain in the post until the contest for new Prime Minister is done.

Emotional Speech

Keir Starmer got emotional while giving his speech. He thanked his wife for “being a rock by my side in good times and bad.” He further mentioned, “When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job, being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife Vic. And being the best dad I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and joy.”

Who will be the Next PM?

A landslide victory in the election of July 2024, his and the party’s approval ratings have since dropped. After winning a key by-election last week, Andy Burnham, who is anticipated to return to Parliament, is widely regarded as the likely replacement for 10 Downing Street, reports PTI. “In the case of a contest, this will ensure a new leader is in place before parliament returns in September,” Keir Starmer added in his speech.

Timeline for Electing New PM

Starmer said nominations would open on July 9 and close before Parliament goes into recess, which is scheduled for July 16, even if the party’s governing body is the one that formally determines the schedule. The new candidate would have to get 20% of the Labour Party MP’s support. With Labour having 403 seats, that amounts to 81 MPs, the challenger included, according to reports.
