NASA Astronaut Shares Breathtaking Photo of Maha Kumbh 2025 Held in Prayagraj from Space
From the International Space Station (ISS), NASA astronaut Don Pettit has posted a spectacular photo of the Maha Kumbh Mela, which took place last year in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India. The historic occasion, which happens once every 144 years, was commemorated last year at Triveni Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers.
Pettit took the picture while on the International Space Station between September 11, 2024 and April 19, 2025. Even if the ISS was traveling at 28,000 km per hour above Earth, Pettit was able to record the event’s enormous scope of the brilliantly illuminated celebration grounds at night using high-powered cameras.
“My best shot of the 2025 Prayag Maha Kumbh Mela from ISS. It is a once-in-a-144-year Hindu pilgrimage to sacred riverbanks in India and one of the largest events in the world, with millions of people in this single photo!” Pettit captioned the pic,” She shared the caption.
Pettit’s picture provides a completely different perspective on the incident, even if ground-level photos captured filled riverbanks, processions, and lighted camps. The enormous extent of lights as seen from space reveals how huge the gathering was.
