On Thursday, the rupee started the day strong before fading and closing with gains of only 3 paise against the US dollar at 95.70, as the rise in crude oil prices negated the support from a weaker dollar index.

Even though a weaker US dollar lessens some depreciation pressure on the domestic currency, crude oil remaining above $90 would continue to put pressure on India’s import bill, according to forex traders.

After the US Treasury declared it would increase its buyback operations for longer-dated Treasury bonds, the dollar index dropped to its lowest point since late May, lowering US long-term yields and diminishing the dollar’s yield advantage. In the interbank foreign currency market, the rupee opened against the US dollar at 95.57 and fluctuated between 95.56 and 95.72 during the trading session.

It finally closed at 95.70 (provisional), up 3 paisa from its previous close. The rupee finished nearly unchanged on Wednesday, settling just 1 paisa higher at 95.73 against the US dollar.
