The complaint was submitted to the Information & Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) by BJP leader Rajneesh Singh from Ayodhya, who has demanded a ban on the film. Singh claims the movie’s storyline is drawn from the subject of his Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed before the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court in May 2022.
In his petition, Singh had sought a court order to open 22 locked rooms inside the Taj Mahal, asserting that the monument may contain remnants of a temple. The Allahabad High Court dismissed the plea in May 2022, in which Singh had requested the formation of a committee involving the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to clarify historical facts about the 17th-century structure.
“I filed a PIL to open the 22 closed rooms in the Taj Mahal. My objective was to ensure transparency and verification of historical facts. I have come to know that the movie The Taj Story is based on the subject of my petition,” Singh stated in his complaint to the I&B Ministry and the CBFC on Monday.
“This is a violation of my intellectual and legal rights. The commercial use of a judicial matter is also inappropriate,” he added.
Singh further expressed concern that the screening of such a film could influence judicial proceedings and provoke unnecessary social and religious tension.
He has urged authorities to examine the film’s script and storyline to determine whether it includes material derived from his petition or any related intellectual work without consent. Singh also demanded that promotion and screening of the film be halted until the inquiry is complete.
The Taj Story is an upcoming Hindi courtroom drama written and directed by Tushar Amrish Goel and produced by Suresh Jha. The film stars Paresh Rawal, Zakir Hussain, Amruta Khanvilkar, Namit Das, and Sneha Wagh.
