IMD Warns Heavy Rainfall in January as Depression in Bay of Bengal Intensifies
According to the reports, the depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to grow worse and travel west Northwest over the next two days, causing significant rainfall in sections of Southern India, with the possibility of severe rainfall in some districts in January. A caution has also been issued by the IMD.
In Mumbai, on the 1st of January, citizens witnessed the rain and the weather was chilled and AQI improved. The weather system, which originated from a low pressure zone, was centered over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjacent East Equatorial Indian Ocean as of January 7, according to the IMD.
The authorities have advised the public to be vigilant and plan their trip carefully due to severe rain warnings being issued for several areas and fishing activities being halted along significant portions of the coast.
According to weather authorities, the system is traveling at a consistent speed in the West-Northwest direction and has the potential to get stronger, resulting in a combination of orange and yellow warnings in coastal and inland regions.
From January 8 to January 11, the IMD has predicted severe rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in certain areas of Tamil Nadu. On January 9 and 10, several areas of the state are predicted to have very heavy rainfall. According to the IMD, Kerala and Mahe are also expected to experience significant rainfall on January 10.
