The incident came to light after content creator Mahi Khan, known online as MahiNergy, shared a video of the encounter. The video, which has gone viral, shows a woman allegedly confronting Khan on Air India Flight AI676 from Kolkata to Mumbai, demanding that he speak Marathi simply because he was travelling to Mumbai.
In the video, Khan asks, “You are telling me that I need to speak in Marathi?” to which the woman responds, “Yes, please do that.” She further insists, “You are going to Mumbai, you should know Marathi.” Khan replied, “No, I don’t speak Marathi.”
As the argument escalated, Khan called the cabin crew for assistance. He claims that the woman then threatened him, saying, “Get down at Mumbai, I’ll show you what badtameezi (misbehaviour) is.”
In his Instagram post caption, Khan wrote: “Speak Marathi or leave Mumbai. That’s what this lady told me on my Air India flight AI676 today, before threatening me for saying ‘I don’t understand Marathi’.”
He also tagged Air India, urging the airline to take action:
“These people should be banned. No passenger should feel unsafe or humiliated for simply speaking a different language.”
The woman in the video was seen wearing a shirt with the Hyundai logo, prompting social media users to tag the company and demand accountability. It is not yet known whether she is a Hyundai employee.
The incident sparked mixed reactions online. While some condemned the woman’s behaviour as contrary to Maharashtrian culture, others called on Air India to take strict action.
