Investment is crucial in today’s world. Many people invest their money in good returns and future health creation. Now, a study by SEBI has revealed new information. It says 63% of Indian households are aware of market products but only 9.5% actually invest in them.

A survey conducted by the market regulator SEBI revealed that there is still a discrepancy between financial access and actual participation in the capital markets. As stated in the Investor Survey 2025, which was carried out by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in collaboration with industry partners, the wide gap is between familiarity and participation. Many media reports also highlight the same.

The survey, which was carried out by Kantar between May and July 2025, included over 90,000 households in 400 towns and 1,000 villages. It investigated the actions of investors, non-investors, novice candidates and individuals who have left the markets. According to the research, 63% of households or approximately 21.3 crore (213 million), are familiar with at least one market linked good. But in reality, just 9.5% of families or about 3.21 crore (32 million), are actively involved.

Awareness levels differ significantly among demographics and regions. The SEBI Investor Survey 2025 found that financial literacy is unevenly distributed, with 74% awareness among urban households compared to 56% in rural regions.

Market understanding is still varied, even with awareness. Only 36% of investors demonstrated a strong or fair understanding of the securities markets, compared to 17.2% of non-investors.

Mutual funds and ETFs are the most popular investment options, with around 53% awareness, among the various products. With 49% of the market, equity markets are a close second. But, knowledge of sophisticated products like derivatives, bonds, REITs and AIFs is still under 15%, suggesting a restricted grasp of anything beyond conventional products.
