After Holi, Mumbaikars started to feel heat from down to dusk. For the last few days, the temperature has been rising and people are also experiencing immense heat and sweating as the climate changes. The AQI of Mumbai remains unsatisfactory after a clear sky at the end of last month. Now the IMD has issued a heatwave alert as Mumabi city records the hottest March day in five years at 40 degrees.
The IMD defines a heatwave as occurring when maximum temperatures are 4.5 to 6.4 degrees above average and a severe heatwave as occurring when the difference exceeds 6.5 degrees. After the IMD raised its earlier yellow heatwave warning to an orange alert for extreme heatwave conditions throughout the Konkan area, the city awoke to a blistering morning.
The IMD data indicated that the Santacruz observatory recorded a high temperature of 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which was 7.6 degrees higher than average. The highest temperature recorded at the Colaba observatory in Mumbai’s southern region was 35.4 degrees.
Historical data shows that this is the warmest March ever recorded in the city since March 28, 2021, when Santacruz saw a maximum temperature of 40.9 degrees. At Ram Mandir, the temperature was 42.4 degrees as measured by an automated weather station.
