Maharashtra FDA Bans Sale of Packaged, Processed Foods and Beverages Near School Premises

The FDA has banned packaged and processed junk food and beverages near school premises in Maharashtra. According to FDA commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said on Wednesday, the sale of packaged and processed meals and drinks that are rich in fat, sugar and salt has been banned by the Maharashtra FDA within 50 meters of school grounds and the restriction will be rigorously enforced.

According to him, everyone that operates a school kitchen and all food providers to institutions must be licensed under the food safety legislation. In an effort to encourage healthy eating practices among children, he announced that the sale, promotion and free distribution of foods high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) are banned in and around all the state’s schools.

The standards cover about 2 crore students in approximately 1.08 lakh schools and are applicable to all government, aided and private schools that are connected with any education board, according to reports. He stated that all food vendors, school cafeterias, host kitchens, and midday meal kitchens must have food safety licenses and registrations.

Local authorities and school leaders have received instructions to make sure that the new regulations, which apply to students in grades 12 as well as children who are 22 months old, are followed.
