ICC Rankings: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Surges in T20Is, Shubman Gill No.1 ODI Batter

India’s captain, Shubman Gill, has retaken the top spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, despite his team’s 2-1 series loss to England, adding another noteworthy chapter to his ascent as one of the best white ball hitters in the world.

Following the Black Caps’ most recent ODI series against the West Indies, New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell gave up his leading spot, allowing Gill to return to the top in the latest ICC rankings update. Gill had initially achieved the status of the world’s top player after a productive run in the format in November 2023, but slipped to second in January this year when Mitchell’s outstanding performances during New Zealand’s successful tour of India earned him the top ranking.

After a spectacular start to his international career, up and coming player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has advanced significantly in the most recent ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings. After scoring 151 runs at an average of 50.33 during India’s 3-0 T20I series triumph over Zimbabwe in Harare, the 15 year old was designated Player of the Series. In the ratings issued by the ICC on Wednesday, Sooryavanshi’s performances propelled him up 230 spots to a career high 48th position among T20I hitters.

With 536 rating points, Suryavanshi is currently behind India teammate Ishan Kishan, who is leading the most recent T20I batting rankings. After scoring 81 in the second match against Zimbabwe, Kishan’s career high 916 points set a T20I hitters record for the third-highest rating ever. He is still comfortably ahead of Sahibzada Farhan, who is in second place with 848 points, despite having 910 points at the conclusion of the series.
