Indians Seeking a Green Card May Have to Wait 179 Years? Here is Why
Backlog is what has caused the long wait to get the green card for Indians. As per reports, the wait could be 179 years due to heavy backlogs. Its quite unimaginable to think but the reports suggests that the wait is what caused by the immigration backlogs. Let’s understand the scenario.
According to a National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) analysis of US Citizenship and Immigration Services data, the projected wait time for Chinese nationals is up to 25 years. US immigration rules restrict the issuance of green cards based on employment to about 140,000 every year, with a maximum of 7 percent going to citizens of any one country in a given year. In conclusion, almost a million Indians are currently in the immigration backlog for employment-based visas as of December 2025.
According to the report, the employment based backlog in the EB-1, EB-2, and EB-3 categories increased by 20.6 percent over the previous five years, reaching an estimated 1.26 million people by December 2025, up from about 1.05 million in April 2020. The EB-3 category had the highest percentage of backlog, at 30.1%, followed by the EB-2 category at 22.9% and the EB-1 category at 16.6%, according to the category.
Beacuase of this, an empolyement based immigrant or a highly skilled Indian worker seeking a labour certification application for a new application could wait 179 years in in EB-2, 38 years in EB-3 and four to five years in the EB-1 category.
