Superman Fame Valerie Perrine Passes Away at 82 After a Courageous Battle With Parkinson’s Disease

Valerie Perrine, renowned for her roles in 1974’s Lenny and 1978’s Superman, passed away on March 23 at 82 at her home in Los Angeles. She gained popularity through her early skin-baring temptress roles, which later earned rave reviews, a Cannes award, and an Oscar nomination for her performance in the Lenny Bruce biopic, Lenny. On Monday, the filmmaker Stacey Souther took to his social media handle to announce Perrine’s death. He wrote, “It is with deep sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that Valerie has passed away.” Her sad demise sent a wave of mourning, with tributes pouring in for the late actress.

For the unversed, in 2015, Valerie Perrine was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Her experience of the condition became the subject of a 45-minute documentary made by Souther, which premiered in 2019. Parkinson’s disease robbed her of the ability to move, eat, and speak. 

Valerie Perrine Breaths Last at 82

Valerie Perrine’s friend Stacey Souther announced the passing away of the actress on Facebook. He wrote, “It is with deep sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that Valerie has passed away. She faced Parkinson’s disease with incredible courage and compassion, never once complaining.” He remembered Perrine as a “true inspiration who lived life to the fullest” and noted that the “world feels less beautiful without her in it.” 

n, she spent her childhood days following her father’s military postings, which took the family to Japan, Paris, and many stops in between. Perrine began her career as a showgirl in Las Vegas but left after her gun-importer fiancé accidentally shot himself in the heart. 

Her later work included The Electric Horseman, Can’t Stop the Music, The Border, and Water. On television, she appeared in popular shows like Northern Exposure, Homicide: Life on the Street, and ER. She worked less in the last four decades of her life, but did appear in 1985’s Water. Valerie Perrine’s absence is deeply felt, and tributes have been pouring in on social media.
