Income tax return (ITR) is mandatory for tax compliance. It is a crucial document for income proof too. Till July 31, every year, we file our income tax returns, and we get the returns if there were any deductions, but in some cases the refund gets delayed. In this article we are going to understand why the delay occurred, what are the reasons and how to check the status. Delays may occur for a variety of reasons, even with quicker systems in place. If you receive a mail saying that you will get a refund by ‘this’ date but still have not received it, then you must immediately check that with your CA.
Reasons for the Delay:
1) In rare cases, the Income Tax Department may deduct unpaid tax debts from prior years from your refund.
2) An additional common cause is incorrect bank account information. Refunds are only given to legitimate bank accounts associated with your PAN.
3) A refund might sometimes be delayed by even a minor mistake, such as incorrect bank information or an inactive account. Make sure all of your data is accurate by double-checking it.
4) Mismatch between the TDS details with Form 26AS could possibly be the reason for a delay in your refund.
What do we need to do?
1) To verify this, log into the e-filing site, navigate to the section for pending actions, and then select the option that is connected to any remaining claims.
2) Under the bank account area of your profile, you may confirm the data. You may either revalidate your account or create a new one if it has not been verified.
3) Taxpayers may also need to submit a request for a refund reissue via the portal’s services area, particularly if your refund is older.
2) You have the option to pay or respond if you disagree with a pending demand. Making these requirements clear will prevent any delays in receiving your refund.
How to check status?
Visit the income tax e-filing portal and log-in to your account using the credentials. Click on e-File then, Income Tax Returns and finally, View Filed Returns. Go to the relevant assessment year and check the ITR status. You can check the refund status of the assessment year 2025-26. You can click on View details. The status of your refund will be displayed in a new window with the information.
