A 7.7 magnitude earthquake has hit Japan, resulting in a tsunami warning. The advisory has been issued according to the officials, as per the reports.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Iwate prefecture at 4:53 pm and its magnitude was changed several times before reaching 7.7. With a depth of about 19 kilometers, the earthquake was rather shallow, which can amplify the intensity of the shaking felt on the ground.

While Tokyo’s buildings shook, the coastal areas of northern Japan put emergency procedures into place, according to the reports. Initially, the authorities issued a tsunami warning, and waves as high as 80 cm were observed. According to NHK, evacuation orders were given to communities like Otsuchi and Kamaishi, which were badly hit by the 2011 catastrophe.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami warning for waves of up to three meters that is 10 feet, after a massive earthquake hit northern Japan on Monday. Japan is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active region where many tectonic plates converge, as highlighted by media reports.

Although the majority are minor, the nation experiences about 1,500 earthquakes every year, which make up about 18% of all seismic events worldwide.
