Many countries have been impacted by the powerful earthquake in the Philippines. Several countries have been issued with tsunami warnings.
According to the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, the earthquake was 10 kilometers deep. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned separately that widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible within the next three hours along some coasts of Indonesia, Philippines, Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea.
The country was heavily damaged by the earthquake, which occurred in the early hours of Monday and had a magnitude of 7.7, bringing down infrastructure, with the casualty toll still pending. Many videos are going viral on social media showcasing the devastating sites.
Previously, the US based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre stated that costal regions of the Philippines may experience tsunami waves as high as 3 metres, that is 9.8 feet, while parts of Indonesia and Malaysia could experience waves as high as 1 metre, that is 3.3 feet.
The first waves were expected to strike the Philippines and parts of Indonesia at around 10 am local time, followed an hour later by Micronesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency. Southern Japan and Taiwan were expected to experience them at around 11 am local time, reported by ANI.
