Amidst the June backlash and cultural theft between the Global fashion brand Prada and India’s Kolhapuri Chappal, there’s some good news. Made in India Kolhapuri Chappals are set to go global with Prada’s voguish touch. The chappals are expected to be priced at approximately Rs 84,000 as part of the exclusive footwear collection from the Italian luxury fashion house, set to arrive in February 2026.
Take a closer look at the deal between Maharashtra and global fashion brand Prada.
After allegedly replicating the design of Indian-made Kolhapuri Chappals, Prada recently announced a line of limited-edition footwear. The luxe brand will craft 2,000 pairs of traditional chappals/sandals in India’s Maharashtra and Karnataka states, under a deal with two state-backed entities.
As per the press release, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Prada, Maharashtra’s LIDCOM (Sant Rohidas Leather Industries & Charmakar Development Corporation), and Karnataka’s LIDKAR (Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation) to take the legacy of India’s traditional leather-made Kolhapuri chappal to the global platform.
During the Italy-India Business Council meeting, the project titled “Prada Made in India – Inspired by Kolhapuri Chappals” was signed at the Italian Consulate in Mumbai. Under this project, the footwear will be made with a combination of centuries-old traditional manufacturing techniques and Prada’s modern and contemporary design sensibilities. The Maharashtra Government, under the guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Minister of State for Social Justice Madhuri Misal, and Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat, has supported the collaboration.
The chappals will be available for purchase at Prada’s 40 retail outlets worldwide and on its official website by February 2026.
