The bright colors in the photo are actually due to a phenomenon called airglow, which is different from the aurora borealis. Airglow is the natural process by which Earth’s atmosphere emits light. It can also occur when atoms or molecules ionized by sunlight collide and capture free electrons.

This phenomenon can be compared to the aurora borealis, but while auroras are caused by high energy particles emitted from the solar wind, the atmospheric glow is caused by normal daily solar radiation.
