Next month there will be a total lunar eclipse accompanied by a blood moon. This is a great chance to experience the charm of the sky. On March 3, observers in several parts of the world will witness a total lunar eclipse, commonly known as a blood moon. This happens when the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned.
During this period, the Earth is located directly between the Sun and the Moon. This causes the Earth’s shadow to completely fall on the moon. As a result, the moon’s color changes dramatically over a period of several hours. The totality phase, when the Moon is completely submerged in Earth’s red shadow, lasts about 58 minutes.
The reddish hue you see when you’re full is caused by Earth’s atmosphere scattering the shorter blue wavelengths of sunlight. The remaining red and orange wavelengths are directed toward the moon. When this light hits the moon’s surface, it gives the moon a coppery or rusty appearance.
Visibility of the March 3 eclipse will vary by region, according to NASA. In East Asia and Australia, it can be observed in the evening. A solar eclipse occurs at night in the Pacific region. It will appear in the early morning sky over North and Central America and far western South America.
