In space, there are several objects that frequently collide with one another. There are too many to count. Although the asteroid known as ‘2024 YR4’ is predicted to collide with the moon by 2032, NASA has confirmed that this will not occur.
On Friday, NASA declared that the asteroid 2024 YR4 is no longer a danger to the Moon. The James Webb Space Telescope’s week long observation, which aided in improving the space rock’s orbit around the Sun, was followed by the confirmation. According to earlier calculations, 2024 Y4 had a little more than a four percent chance of hitting the Moon on December 22, 2032.
During its flyby, the asteroid will still be relatively close to the lunar surface. According to estimates, the furthest distance between the Moon and YR4 will be about 21,200 kilometers.
This ‘city killer’ asteroid, which was first discovered in Chile by the NASA funded Asteroid Terrestrial impact Last Alert System in December 2024, initially rang alarm bells due to its potential to hit Earth. With the Moon becoming its next possible target, it was ultimately determined to be a false alarm last year.
“This update reflects a better understanding of the asteroid’s expected location in 2032, as opposed to a change in its orbital trajectory. Prior analyses, conducted prior to the inclusion of these new data, predicted a 4.3% probability of a lunar strike by 2024 YR4 on this day,” NASA stated.
