China Answered Google’s Nano Banana AI By Launching Seedream 4.0

TikTok owner ByteDance has developed Seedream 4.0, which allows users to upload up to six reference images to maintain consistency across generated outputs.

The makers claim that Seedream 4.0 can easily outperform Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model for both image generation and editing, according to its internal evaluation benchmark, MagicBench.

Seedream 4.0 is designed to assist designers, marketers, and content creators. It can generate images from natural language text prompts and provide precise edits to existing images, much like Google’s Gemini Nano Banana.

Image generation on Seedream 4.0 is simpler, as it doesn’t require heavy prompts or instructions, making it highly user-friendly. It can make detailed changes without disrupting the finer details of an existing image.

As competition intensifies, it will be interesting to see how ByteDance’s Seedream 4.0 performs against rivals, especially Google’s DeepMind AI tools.

Currently, Seedream 4.0 is available on ByteDance’s local platforms, such as the Jimeng and Doubao AI apps.
