Shubman Gill and Shafali Verma Named ICC Player of the Month for September 2026
After his outstanding performance in the ODI series against the West Indies, India captain Shubman Gill was named ICC men’s ‘player of the month’ for a record fifth time on Tuesday. Opener Shafali Verma received the women’s honor for her impressive performances in the Asia Cup and the Asian Games.
This is the fifth time in a month that athletes from the same national board have won both the men’s and women’s accolades, with Indian cricketers doing so twice before. The accolades went to Jasprit Bumrah and Smriti Mandhana in June 2024. Mandhana and Abhishek Sharma were chosen for September 2025.
Shafali has won the monthly prize for the second time, according to the ICC. The 22 year old first experienced victory in November of last year when she assisted India in winning the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup at home. As India triumphed in the Women’s Asia Cup, she was the leading run scorer for the team.
The ICC reported that Shubman Gill won the award over other candidates, including India’s Abhishek Sharma and Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza. Gill scored 333 runs in India’s first two One Day Internationals versus West Indies, including a hundred in the first match and an undefeated double hundred in the second. India prevailed in both games by an eight wicket margin.
Gill has now won the ICC Mens Player of the Month award five times, following victories in January 2023, September 2023, February 2025 and July 2025, extending his record as the men’s player with the most victories.
