The IPL fever is officially taking Indian cricket fanatics by storm right from the first match of the tournament held on March 28. The following day, the audience was treated to a nail-biting chase of the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Held at Wankhede Stadium on March 29, 2026, MI won the toss in their IPL 2026 match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Captain Hardik Pandya elected to bowl first. MI overhauled KKR’s 220/4 with five balls to spare. What’s more special is the fact that MI’s stalwart Rohit Sharma rolled back the years with a vintage half-century. He dethroned Virat Kohli’s long-standing IPL record.

Here are the key highlights from yesterday’s match!

IPL 2026: MI’s Rohit Sharma Breaks Virat Kohli’s Long-Standing IPL Record in the KKR Match

Rohit Sharma smacked a 38-ball 78 runs, including six sixes and as many fours, bringing MI’s total score to 221. The 38-year-old added 148 runs for the opening stand with Ryan Rickelton, who scored 81 off 43 balls. During this chase, Rohit broke fellow veteran Virat Kohli’s long-standing IPL record of 1,159 runs. Sharma tops the list of players with the most runs against a single team in IPL. Take a closer look at the list.

  • 1,161 – Rohit Sharma vs KKR
  • 1,159 – Virat Kohli vs PBKS
  • 1,146 – Virat Kohli vs CSK
  • 1,134 – David Warner vs PBKS
  • 1,130 – Virat Kohli vs DC
  • 1,093 – David Warner vs KKR

Rohit Sharma not just topped the list but also was hailed as only the fourth player in IPL history to hit 50 or more fifty-plus scores, behind Kohli (72), David Warner (66), and Shikhar Dhawan (53). He is also MI’s top scorer and one of only four batters with more than 6000 runs in the IPL. For the uninitiated, Rohit won six IPL titles, including one with Deccan Chargers and five as captain of the Mumbai Indians. The win of MI against KKR was indeed a great start to the tournament. Fans and cricket lovers look forward to more such exciting matches ahead.
