Shiv Sena (UBT) strongly criticises BJP for Sonam Wangchuk’s arrest, portraying him as ‘anti-national’

Uddhav Thackeray, aka UBT’s Shiv Sena, has slammed the BJP-led government for the violent protest in Ladakh over the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. Wangchuk was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) last week. Shiv Sena (UBT) called it an ‘act of cowardice’.

Shiv Sena (UBT) Slams BJP

Uddhav Thackeray’s party lashed out at the BJP-led government via their editorial piece written in their mouthpiece, Saamana. Thackeray’s party slammed BJP for portraying a Gandhian activist as a ‘traitor’ and said they have disgraced themselves by doing so. As reported by IANS, the piece also posed the question – What did the British do differently?

Further, the editorial piece slammed the BJP-led party for attempting to portray Sonam Wangchuk as an ‘anti-national’, blamed Pakistan for the unrest in Ladakh and claimed that Sonam had ties to Pakistan. The piece further mentioned, “If Wangchuk had gone to Pakistan or Bangladesh, he would not have sneaked in through some secret route. He obtained visas for both countries on his Indian passport and attended social programmes there. Similarly, PM Modi once went to Pakistan for the birthday of the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.”

As reported by IANS, Shiv Sena (UBT) also slammed by stating, “Bangladesh is considered a friendly country by India. Surprisingly, the Director General of Police of Ladakh is unaware that the BJP-led government at the Centre has given political asylum to the ousted President of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, in India.”

The editorial piece on Saamana further stated that Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali, visited Pakistan as a part of the United Nations’ conference. It was held on the topic of environment and climate change and Wangchuk spoke only on that topic. Shiv Sena (UBT) stated that Sonam went there only after seeking the Indian government’s permission. “When this is clear, it is foolish to say that Pakistan has a hand in the violence in Leh and that Wangchuk is responsible for it,” the party stated.
