Good mornings are incomplete without a fresh brew of coffee. What if we tell you that you can make your coffee gut-friendly as well as an anti-inflammatory powerhouse? Coffee is not just a beverage to wake you up from your slumber land, instead, it has other roles to play if you make a wiser choice of ingredients. One or two mindfulness choices and you can slurp a healthier version of your coffee. Gastroenterologist, Dr Saurabh Sethi, from AIIMS, shared five simple and the easiest hacks to make your coffee a brain-boosting fuel. Here’s how you can unleash the inner barista residing within you and give your coffee a delicious and energizing upgrade!

5 Easy Steps to Brew a Healthy Morning Coffee

Step 1: Begin with freshly brewed black coffee. Research proves that black coffee is rich in antioxidants. It could facilitate weight management and protect your liver.

Step 2 (Optional): If you are not lactose intolerant, add a splash of soy or almond milk. Soy milk is loaded with protein, vitamins B and A, omega-3s, and antioxidants that enhance muscle, nerve function and promote heart health. On the other hand, almond milk is low in calories and rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin E, which support bone, heart, and brain health.

Step 3: Add a pinch of cinnamon. It balances your blood sugar and reduces inflammation. Not to forget, it has immense abilities to make your coffee a lot more flavourful.

Step 4: Mix a small spoon of cocoa powder, as it contains polyphenols that feed your good gut bacteria and support brain health.

Step 5: Add a teaspoon of MCT oil. It gives your body clean energy, supports focus, and can even help beneficial microbes thrive. According to the National Institutes of Health, MCTs are saturated fatty acids found in animal and plant sources. They contain 8 to 12 carbons. The oil is extracted from coconut oil or palm kernel oil and further processed by manufacturers for public use as a supplement.

Tada, your healthy version of coffee is ready!
