Tansa Lake Overflows As Heavy Rain Continues in Mumbai, Storage Rises Nearly 62 Percent

Mumbai city is experiencing heavy rains and, as per the latest forecast, the city is going to have heavy rainfall in coming days as the IMD has issued a yellow alert for the city. Now, there is good news for the citizens. Tansa lake is now overflowing.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the gates of the Tansa Dam were opened on Wednesday at approximately 8.51 am after Tansa Lake, one of the main reservoirs providing water to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, started to overflow. The BMC stated in an X post that Tansa Lake, one of the seven reservoirs that provides drinking water to the city and has a maximum storage capacity of 14,508 crore liters, began overflowing during the current period of heavy rain.

After two days of torrential rains, the seven lakes in Mumbai that supply potable water to the city saw a dramatic increase in storage, with the total water stock increasing to 61.9% of full capacity on Wednesday, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Over the last 24 hours, the reservoirs added almost 60,000 million liters of water, bringing the total storage to 8,95,907 million liters.

The civic body posted photos of the dam’s flowing water on social media, tagging Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other authorities in the process.
