Mumbai: At a ceremony in Mumbai on Saturday, Sunetra Pawar, 62, the wife of the late NCP leader Ajit Pawar, took an oath as the first woman deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The political significance of her induction into the state’s highest leadership was highlighted by the presence of senior officials and allies at the event today, 31st January 2026.
Following the death of her husband and NCP Chief and state’s deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, in a plane crash on Wednesday morning, she takes responsibility. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis received a letter to that effect, which he forwarded to Governor Acharya Devvrat. Sunetra Pawar will now manage all of Ajit Pawar’s former portfolios, except finance and planning, according to the reports. Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a tweet, wishing her for holding the responsibility.

Sunetra Pawar inherited a political background from her father. She was born in Dharashiv in 1963. Bajirao Patil, her father and Padamsinh Bajirao Patil, her brother, were both prominent political figures. Sunetra Pawar has a B.Com degree from SB College in Aurangabad.
