Since 1995, Fake Scientist From Mumbai Received Crores in Foreign Funds: Reports
The accused, identified as 60-year-old Akhtar Hussaini, a resident of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, had been posing as a BARC scientist since the 1990s. During the arrest, police recovered over 10 maps, along with purported data related to nuclear weapons.
Investigators also seized fake passports, Aadhaar and PAN cards, and a forged BARC identity card. Notably, the accused used multiple aliases, identifying himself as Ali Raza Hussain on one ID and Alexander Palmer on another.
Akhtar’s brother, Adil Hussaini, was also arrested in Delhi for his alleged involvement. According to the Mumbai Police Crime Branch, the duo had been receiving foreign funding since 1995. Initially, the payments were in lakhs, but over time, the amounts grew into crores.
Authorities suspect the brothers were paid in exchange for confidential blueprints linked to BARC and other nuclear installations.
During the probe, police discovered a private bank account belonging to Akhtar, which showed several suspicious transactions. They have requested detailed statements from the concerned bank to ascertain the exact amount and origin of the funds.
Records also reveal that both brothers visited Pakistan and are suspected of having links with the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Akhtar had reportedly been living under multiple identities for decades. In 2004, he was deported from Dubai after claiming to be a “scientist possessing classified documents.”
As per reports, Akhtar sold his ancestral home in Jharkhand in 1996 but continued to obtain fake documents using his old contacts. His brother Adil allegedly introduced him to Munazzil Khan, a Jharkhand resident who helped them forge two fake passports under the names Hussaini Mohammad Adil and Nasimuddin Syed Adil Hussaini.
The addresses mentioned on these passports corresponded to the Jamshedpur property sold nearly 30 years ago. Police suspect the brothers used these forged identities to travel abroad and carry out their operations.
