Retail inflation reached 2.75% in January 2026. This marks a high in percentage. In this article let’s understand the difference between before and after. According to data released on February 12, retail inflation in India was 2.75% in FY26 under the newly published Consumer Price Index (CPI) series, up from 1.33% that is, under the old series, the month before.

According to the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), food inflation was 2.13%, with urban areas at 2.44% and rural areas at 1.96%. In January 2026, there was a 2.05% rise in housing prices overall, with a 2.39% increase in rural areas and a 1.92% increase in urban areas.

With the base year changing from 2012 to 2024, the publication represents the first significant modification of India’s retail inflation data in more than ten years.

The new additions, which are meant to reflect changing consumer behavior brought about by urbanization, rising disposable incomes and increased post pandemic health consciousness, include air purifiers, fitness bands, sanitizers, pet food and wireless headphones like AirPods, according to the media reports.

The National Statistics Office (NSO), which is under the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, has released a new series that paints a clearer picture of prices by raising the number of commodities from 259 to 308 and services from 40 to 50, PTI reports.
