The most awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has finally started service. On Wednesday, the airport service commenced by handling 48 flights and serving over 4,000 passengers on the first day, December 25.
With peak traffic between 5 pm and 7 pm, the first day begins with 48 flights carrying over 4,000 passengers and linking nine domestic locations.
According to media reports, the first arrival was IndiGo flight 6E460 from Bengaluru, which landed at 8 am and was greeted with a ceremonial water cannon salute. More than half an hour later, at 8.40 am, the first departure from NMIA was an IndiGo flight to Hyderabad.
On the first day of operations, there were four carriers, which were IndiGo, Akasa Air, Air India Express and Star Air. One of the biggest greenfield airport projects in India, NMIA, was developed and is run by Adani Airports Holdings Limited.

In accordance with a statement issued by the Adani Group, Mumbai now joins other international aviation hubs like London, New York, Moscow, Tokyo, and Shanghai, each of which is served by several airports to meet increasing demand, thanks to the operational NMIA, reported by ANI.
The launch of NMIA represents a significant improvement in the region’s air connectivity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the Navi Mumbai International Airport on October 8 of this year, after the cornerstone was laid in 2018.
According to the reports, the airport would handle up to 90 million passengers every year once all five phases have been finished. In addition to several transport connections, it will also have specific cargo terminals.
