India’s July CPI Inflation Climbs to 4.45 Percent Amid Rising Food Prices
According to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Wednesday, India’s retail inflation increased to 4.45 percent in July from 4.38 percent in June, primarily due to an increase in food inflation, particularly higher prices for onion, ginger and garlic.
According to the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), food inflation increased from 5.32 percent in June to 5.52 percent in July. Urban food inflation was 5.05 percent, compared to rural food inflation’s 5.79 percent.
From 4.73 percent in June, onion inflation surged quickly in July to 22.54 percent. From 50.41 percent to 83.62 percent, ginger’s inflation rate grew, while garlic’s increased from 17.93 percent to 35.36 percent.
Tomatoes, Peas and Lady’s Fingers Price Rise
The increase in headline inflation was partially countered by the ongoing deflation of several veggies. Year-on-year, potato prices fell by 16.56 percent in July, while peas and lady’s fingers both saw deflation of 5.27 percent and 5.52 percent, respectively. In contrast to a 31.92 percent rise in June, tomato prices also decreased by 4.59 percent.
Hotels and Transport
Transport inflation was 4.43 percent, compared to 5.24 percent in July for the combined food and beverages division. Hotels and eating places saw a 7.72% increase in prices.
