Good News for Mumbaikars! No water cuts next season, lakes 99% full

Mumbai witnessed a powerful monsoon in 2025, with waterlogging in several places due to incessant showers. Even in the month of September, the rains seem not to stop. One might wonder what this year’s monsoon means for the water level at the seven lakes in the city, which supply water to the citizens. According to the reports, the stock of drinking water is now nearly full, at 14.30 lakh million litres, which is 98.82% of the lakes’ total capacity.
Compared to the past three years, the figure is the highest level of water recorded on this date. The lakes that supply water to Mumbai are: Upper Vaitarna, Tansa, Tulsi, Modak Sagar, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, and Vehar. These lakes can hold up to 14.47 million litres of water. As per BMC, each 1% of water can be useful in meeting the city’s needs for three days.
The current supply will last about 300 days. The good news is that the city might not face water cuts next season. If this happens, it would be a big relief for Mumbaikars.
Last year, the lakes had water stocks filled up to 98.71% and in 2023, it was 96.98%. If the rains continue for a few more weeks, one wonders how much the reservoirs would get filled up.
