BMC Elections 2026: Mumbai to Get a Woman Mayor, Here Are the Other Cities Following

It has been a week since the BMC Elections happened in Mumbai, and BJP won the same with the maximum number of seats. Everyone is now eagerly anticipating the announcement of Mumbai’s new mayor. The latest major update is that the city’s new mayor will be a woman, and the same will be announced soon. The Urban Development Department (UDD) announced on Thursday that a woman from the general category will hold the city’s mayoral post.

BMC Elections 2026: Other Cities To Follow The Same

The decision of the new mayor was taken through a lottery system used by the Maharashtra state government to decide which category (Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBCs, open category or women) the next Mumbai mayor will come from. At 11 am, the lottery was held for 29 municipal corporations where elections were recently held. Now that the results are out, political parties will submit letters of intent to the BMC and officially name the person or woman they want to take Mumbai’s mayor post. Other cities whose mayor will be a woman are Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai and Dhule.

After the Mahayuti alliance (BJP and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena) won 118 out of 127 seats, ending the Shiv Sena (UBT)’s decades-long hold over the city, there is intense curiosity about who will be the next mayor. Furthermore, Kishori Pednekar, the city’s former mayor, has raised an objection to why Mumbai did not get an OBC reservation this time. Pednekar even pointed out that the mayoral post was unreserved in the last two terms. After Kishori’s claims, a state minister stated that they will look into the matter.
