Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections will be held on January 15 next year. The counting will be held the next day, on January 16. The election schedule for BMC and 28 other municipal organizations was released on Monday by the State Election Commission. The commission held a press conference. According to State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare, there will be as many as 2,869 seats available in these municipal corporations and 3.48 million voters are eligible to use their rights in these significant urban areas of the state.

The major municipal entities in the elections are Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. This is the first BMC election after the 2022 Maharashtra political crisis. Following a debate over the imposition of Hindi in the state, Uddhav and Raj Thackeray have joined after twenty years and are likely to run for the BMC elections together, according to the reports.

The BMC elections are considered crucial for political supremacy in Mumbai as the polls will see a direct contest among the major parties.

The BJP won 82 seats and the Shiv Sena, then undivided, captured 84 seats in 2017. The Congress had won 31 seats, while the United NCP had 13 seats. Raj Thackeray’s MNS had won seven seats.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s projected budget for 2025-26 is Rs. 74,427 crore, with spending at Rs 43,162 crore, which is 58% of the overall money set aside for development initiatives, as per the media reports.
