Employees of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) have started an indefinite strike, which is affecting Mumbai’s public bus service and impacting millions of daily commuters.
BEST’s budget should be combined with the BMC, the 7th pay commission should be implemented, the remaining retirement benefits should be paid and contractual/wet-lease activities should be terminated, according to the laborers’ demands.
According to the sources, only a few buses were able to depart the city’s 27 BEST depots in the morning. During the morning rush hour, the strike compelled commuters to use other modes of transportation, including taxis, autos, cabs such as Ola and Uber and the metro, to reach their destinations.
BEST Sanyukt Kamgar Kruti Samiti, a joint action committee of 12 unions, has called the strike and BEST has yet to make a formal statement regarding its precise impact. Following the suburban train system, BEST is Mumbai’s second-biggest public transport operator, transporting about 25 lakh people every day on its buses.
