A Bengaluru based woman has claimed that a bug in the Rapido app caused her to become stuck at the incorrect location and sparked a tense encounter with an auto rickshaw driver, sparking new concerns about the ride hailing platform’s safety and verification methods.

According to a video uploaded on Instagram, the woman reserved an auto at around 9 am to travel the 18 km from her house to her office. The trip took an unexpected turn when the driver followed a destination displayed on his version of the Rapido app, which was different from the office location she had put in while booking, according to her.

Despite the claimed routing difference, she stated that the app’s fare remained at about Rs. 350. She stated that she told the driver that it seemed to be a platform issue and paid the price shown on the app. However, the incident is said to have gotten worse once the trip was over. The driver asked for extra money, claiming he should be compensated for the longer route displayed on his app, according to her. The driver allegedly exited the auto and aggressively confronted her over the fee, according to her.

Additionally, she claimed that her attempts to obtain aid via Rapido’s safety channels were futile. She said the problem was not promptly resolved, despite a support representative apologising for her experience. Local residents saw the altercation and hurried to her aid, she claimed. She said that neighbors assisted her in finding a nearby police station and informed the police about the area.

She also stated that officials later discovered that the individual who picked her up was not the same person registered on the Rapido platform, raising fresh questions about ride hailing services’ identity verification and safety procedures.

Company Responds

“We sincerely apologise for the unprofessional behaviour and the inconvenience caused during your ride. As discussed over the call, the safety and well being of our customers is our top priority. They have also added that they had sacked the captain from the platform and are also evaluating the additional measures to strengthen the safeguards.
