Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar lost his life in a fatal plane crash on January 28, 2026. The incident took place in Pune’s Baramati and has shaken the entire state. Along with Ajit, the others on the flight, including the pilots, also lost their lives. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has confirmed a major update on the black box from the Learjet 45 flight.
On their social media page on X, the MoCA shared details about the black box they recovered from the plane in which Ajit Pawar and others were on board. In their post, they mentioned that following the tragic incident, they immediately activated the investigative mechanisms. The ministry wanted to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into the plane crash.
Further, about the team that recovered the black box, MoCa posted, “A team of three officers from AAIB, Delhi, and another team of three officers from the DGCA, Mumbai Regional Office, reached the crash site on 28 January. The Director General, AAIB, also arrived at the site the same day. The investigation is progressing expeditiously, and the black box of the ill-fated aircraft has been recovered.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) remains fully committed to completing the investigation within a defined timeframe, strictly in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and laid-down guidelines.”

The Ministry of Aviation has initiated the investigation under Rules 5 and 11 of the AAIB Rules, 2025.
Ajit Pawar’s final rites took place at Baramati’s Vidya Pratishthan ground on Thursday morning. Furthermore, the others who lost their lives in the plane crash are Pawar’s personal security officer, Vidip Jadhav; flight attendant Pinky Mali; and pilots Sumit Kapur and Shambhavi Pathak.
