After Delhi, Mumbai’s AQI Worsens; Hits ‘Severe’ Category
Mumbai’s air quality has become hazardous, it has hit the severe category. Citizens need to take all precautions and stay indoors as much as possible. On Tuesday morning, the city witnessed a heavy layer of dust and fog blanket that continued till evening. The air is polluted and now the AQI has also got worse. The real-time monitoring data showed that by 7:53 am on Tuesday, Mumbai’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was 232. That means it was in severe category.
Air quality is bad in the city
The public is at significant risk of experiencing respiratory consequences of this level, not just vulnerable populations. The Wadala Truck Terminal, which registered a mind-boggling AQI of 380 and was deemed Hazardous, is where the situation is at its worst. Other suburbs are not doing significantly better. The AQI in Momin Nagar in Jogeshwari was 266, just behind Sen Nagar in Santacruz, which had a score of 268. Both districts are still in the severe category, suggesting that extended exposure may cause respiratory pain.
Industrial centers are not the only places where there is pollution. Colaba, which often benefits from the sea breeze, had a severe Air Quality Index of 254. These areas have been affected due to the bad pollution.
GRAP in Mumbai
In any area of Mumbai where the Air Quality Index (AQI) remains over 300 for three days in a row, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stated that it will implement Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
The main requirement of the most stringent tier of GRAP is the prohibition of construction work, which officials claim is a significant factor in the city’s present pollution levels, according to the media reports.
