A 12,000 year old fossil bed has been found in Tamil Nadu. According to the reports, the fossil is approximately eight thousand or twelve thousand years old. It has been discovered in Tamil Nadu’s Panaiyur area in Thoothukudi district. Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav said on Monday. He did share a tweet regarding the discovery.

Following heavy rainfall in 2023, the site was discovered and the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) later carried out a survey there, he added.

“The assessment confirms a newly discovered fossil bed dating back to the Holocene period (8,000 to 12,000 years ago), which significantly enriches the Quaternary fossil record of India. This discovery is important because it helps us better understand India’s ancient wildlife, environment and climate,” the Environment minister said in his X post.

In addition, he mentioned that the Environment Ministry appreciated ZSI’s swift and exemplary scientific response in protecting India’s natural heritage. Sediments exposed to water runoff can be eroded by rain over time. Runoff from rainfall washed away the topsoil here, revealing the underlying sediments that held fossils. This kind of erosion might resemble a real archaeological dig, as per media reports.
