Tributes have been pouring across the nation since the sad demise of Veteran Tamil Filmmaker Bharathiraja. Touted as the towering personality in the film industry, Bharathiraja was fondly known as Iyakkunar Imayam, meaning the ‘Pinnacle among Directors. The director breathed his last at the age of 84, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in Chennai.

After the sad news of Bharathiraja’s passing away, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and other celebrities visited the filmmaker’s Chennai residence and paid their final respects. Members of the FEFSI union of the Tamil film industry too paid homage to the legend.
As reported by the Economic Times, the actor-director had been dealing with multiple health issues over a couple of months. In 2025, He was admitted to a hospital in Chennai due to difficulty in breathing. He then remained under regular medical supervision and received treatment for multiple age-related problems.
Mr. Bharathiraja bagged six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards (South), six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and a Nandi Award. More significantly, he was instrumental in introducing several new actors in Tamil cinema. Not just that, he rechristened many actors with names beginning with the letter “R”, gifting the industry with talented artistes including Radikaa, Revathi, Radha, Ranjitha, and Rekha. Several actors and popular personalities from the entertainment industry and politics paid a long, emotional tribute to the late director. All in all, his absence will be deeply felt, while his contribution to cinema will be remembered for years to come.
