The King’s Warden Mints Rs 14.75 Million, Becomes the Highest-Grossing Film in South Korean History
Directed by Jang Hang-jun, The King’s Warden has been hitting milestones with every passing day. It has become the third most-watched movie in the history of Korean cinema. As of Monday, the historical film continued its reign at the box office. The Korean Film Council stated that the film attracted about 803,000 moviegoers over the weekend, bringing its cumulative total to 14.75 million.
Released in theatres on 19 February 2026, the Jang Hang-jun directorial is behind two films in terms of admissions, the 2014 war epic, The Admiral: Roaring Currents, and the 2019 action comedy, Extreme Job.
The King’s Warden Hits Milestone: Check Box Office Collections
The King’s Warden has raked in 142.5 billion won ($94.6 million). It has created history by surpassing the box office collection of The Admiral: Roaring Currents and Extreme Job, which earned 135.7 billion won and 139.6 billion won, respectively.
For the unversed, the drama reimagines historical events through a fictional lens. It chriniclas around the unlikely friendship between village chief Eom Heung-do, played by Yoo Hai-jin, and the deposed King Danjong, played by Park Ji-hoon, of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) during the latter’s exile in the village. What garnered the attention of the audience is the fact that the viewers resonate with the young king’s suffering and the villagers who rally wholeheartedly to his side. Moreover, the stunning depiction of the real-life exile location and exceptional performances by the actors leave movie buffs awestruck.
