Legendary South Korean Actor Ahn Sung-ki Passes Away at 74, Cause of Death Revealed
On January 5, 2026, Veteran South Korean actor Ahn Sung-ki passed away at the age of 74. Seoul-based Soonchunhyang University Hospital announced the actor’s demise, and soon after, his agency, Artist Company, confirmed the news. The legendary star breathed his last at 9:00 am on Monday. No sooner did the agency share the news than fans, co-stars, and media began offering heartfelt condolences.
A few days ago, the Artist Company agency shared updates concerning the actor’s health. He was in a critical condition and receiving treatment after collapsing at his residence on December 30.

South Korean icon Ahn Sung-ki carved his prolific 60-year career with unwavering determination. His positive and gentle public image earned him the nickname “The Nation’s Actor.” It is disheartening to know that the actor has left for the heavenly abode at the age of 74.
Ahn Sung-ki’s representative label posted a statement whose caption read, “Sung-gi Ahn was a person who has been with the history of popular culture in Korea with a deep sense of mission and consistent dedication to acting. His acting has always been towards people and life, and through his countless works, he has conveyed deep resonance and comfort across ages and generations.”
Moreover, since 2019, he has struggled with blood cancer. On December 30, 2025, a sudden medical emergency reportedly occurred when Ahn Sung Ki choked on food. CPR was administered on-site, and he was later admitted to a nearby hospital, where doctors continued to monitor his condition closely.
Born in 1952, the South Korean actor valued his dignity and responsibility as a person above all else, and respected senior artists and the scene. According to the agency’s statement, his funeral will be supervised by the (re)Shin Young-chul Art and Culture Foundation and the Korean Film Actors Association. In room 31 of the Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital Funeral Home, the funeral will be held at 6 a.m. on January 9, with Byeolgeurida in Yangpyeong as the burial site. Honorary funeral committee members Shin Young-chul, director Bae Chang-ho, director Lee Yun-chul of the Korean Film Actor Association, Shin Young-cheol Art and Culture Foundation’s acting agent, and director Yun-ho Yang of the Korean Film Artists Association will be among the funeral committee members. Undoubtedly, Actor Sung Gi Ahn’s work, contribution to films, and spirit will remain with fans and the audience for years to come.
