Emmy Awards to Shift to Streaming Services, to Amazon Prime Video Next Year, No Subscription Required

The Emmy Awards are moving to Prime Video starting in 2027 in a six-year deal struck between Amazon and the Television Academy. On Tuesday, according to an agreement, a seven-decade run of broadcast networks airing the ceremony honoring the best in TV will come to an end. The agreement replaces the “Wheel Deal” under which ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC took turns airing the show, a rotation that ended with this year’s telecast on NBC, which was also the first to air it nationally.

Beginning with next September’s 79th edition of the Primetime Emmy Awards, the biggest change may be underway. According to Amazon, the award ceremony will be free to watch, with no Prime Video subscription required, in more than 240 countries and territories. It is the first time the Emmys will have a single, dedicated home.

Cris Abrego, the Chairman of the Television Academy, told The Associated Press, “Continuity is a big part of what we’re looking for because the rotating part of it basically meant in many ways that we were starting over every year.” He further added that the move gives the awards unprecedented global reach and a year-round partner, and thanked the broadcast networks for building the Emmys into a cultural institution.

For the unversed, the major shift has been announced after this year’s Primetime Emmys, which drew 6.87 million viewers on NBC, nearly 10 per cent lower than the previous year. The Emmys follow the Oscars, which will transition to YouTube from 2029, as the industry shifts from broadcast TV to streaming. However, the OTT platform has streamed the Academy of Country Music Awards since 2022. Now, netizens are eager to binge-watch the Emmy Awards on Prime Video starting next year. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards already took place on Monday, Sept. 14, 2026, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. The event was broadcasted live by NBC.
