Dawson’s Creek Actor James Van Der Beek Passes Away at 48 After Battling Colorectal Cancer

Actor James Van Der Beek, popular for his role in the era-defining American teen show, Dawson’s Creek, passed away at the age of 48 after battling colorectal cancer. Kevin Williamson’s soapy drama ran for six seasons across the millennium. The news of his sad demise came on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. The actor breathed his last in Austin, Texas, United States.

Since 2010, Beek has been married to Kimberly Van Der Beek and has six children. The actor publicly announced his cancer diagnosis in 2024. He opened up, stating that he had been privately dealing with the diagnosis and had been taking steps to resolve it. Today, the entire Hollywood industry mourns his loss.

This Wednesday, James Van Der Beek’s family released an official statement on Instagram about his sad demise. The caption of the post read, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now, we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.” 

While James also had roles in the films Varsity Blues and The Rules of Attraction, Van Der Beek never truly established himself in cinema. The widely acclaimed personality lately made a surprise appearance in September at a ‘Dawson Creek’ reunion charity event in New York City. All in all, the actor strived hard to separate himself from the legacy and identity that Dawson’s Creek created. His loss is deeply felt worldwide! Though he has left for the heavenly abode, James Van Der Beek stays alive in the hearts of millions for years.
