Mumbai Sees Decline in Crimes Against Senior Citizens

According to the NCRB, crimes against senior citizens in Mumbai have decreased by 9.4%. In contrast, Delhi recorded the highest number of crimes against the elderly, followed by Bengaluru.
Delhi has consistently maintained the top position in crimes against senior citizens. In Mumbai, elderly citizens have been victims of crimes such as forgery, theft, extortion, grievous hurt, cheating, attempted murder, and dacoity on a daily basis.
A senior IPS officer noted that senior citizens who live alone and depend on household help or caretakers are the most vulnerable. “The majority of offences against the elderly are committed by people known to them, including domestic help. Most senior citizens are reluctant to register their hired help with the local police for fear of losing them,” the officer said.
Another IPS officer added, “Anti-chain-snatching squads have been deployed at several locations, which has helped bring down snatching incidents across the city. Regular patrolling is also carried out in areas with a high population of senior citizens. Preventive measures have been initiated against habitual offenders.”
