The video, which surfaced online on Monday (January 19), reportedly shows Dr K Ramachandra Rao, Director General of Police (Civil Rights Enforcement), Karnataka, in an inappropriate and compromising situation with multiple women.
Following the circulation of the video, the state government suspended him from service with immediate effect.Reacting to the controversy, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that strict action would be taken if the officer is found guilty after due inquiry.
Suspension Order Details
According to the suspension order, Rao’s conduct was described as “indecent” and “inappropriate for a government official,” bringing embarrassment to the government and amounting to a violation of service rules.
The government stated that it was “prima facie satisfied” that Rao’s immediate suspension was necessary pending a formal inquiry. The order also directs that Rao cannot leave his headquarters without prior written permission from the state government during the suspension period.
DGP Denies Allegations
After the video went viral, Rao reportedly attempted to meet Home Minister G Parameshwara, but the meeting did not take place.
Speaking to reporters after leaving the minister’s residence, Rao claimed that the video was fake and morphed, and said he would consult legal counsel for further action.
Rao said he was unsure when or how the footage was recorded and suggested that it could be an old video. When asked if it dated back several years, he said it might be from around eight years ago, when he was posted in Belagavi. He added that he intended to explain to the Home Minister that false information was being circulated.
Political Reactions
Karnataka Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar said the government would take action against anyone found guilty of wrongdoing.
Senior BJP MLA and former minister S Suresh Kumar termed the incident “unforgivable,” stating that the officer’s alleged actions had tarnished the image of the police department and eroded public trust.
