On Saturday morning, a 19-year-old college student was allegedly molested at Vashi railway station while she was talking on her phone. This shocking incident, which happened around 11:40 a.m., has once again raised concerns about women’s safety on public transportation.
According to police, the young woman was waiting on the platform for her train when a man approached and stood close to her. While she was still on a phone call, he allegedly touched her inappropriately. Disturbed by the incident, she immediately reported it to a woman Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel on duty at the station.
According to a report by TOI, Senior Inspector Kiran Undre of the Vashi GRP said, “The complainant was returning home from college around 11:40 a.m. when the accused approached and stood beside her on the platform. While she was on a call, he touched her inappropriately. The victim immediately reported the incident to a female GRP officer on duty. Meanwhile, the accused managed to escape.”
GRP officers promptly reviewed the station’s CCTV footage and were able to identify the accused. Following that, a manhunt was launched, and the suspect was arrested from his residence on Monday, just two days after the incident. Senior Inspector Undre said, “The accused’s image was obtained from the CCTV, and he was arrested from his residence on Monday.”
