Udaipur’s Five-Star Hotel Fined Rs. 10 Lakh for Privacy Breach
A five-star hotel in Udaipur, where people spend luxury holidays and attend big fat weddings, has been charged with a whopping fine of Rs. 10 lakhs for violating privacy.
According to reports, a couple from Chennai had reserved a one night stay at Udaipur’s Leela Palace on January 26, 2025. The complaint submitted to the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum in Chennai (North) claims that a member of the housekeeping team reportedly broke into the room without permission while both guests were in the restroom.
The couple notified the hotel reception about the incident right away, according to sources. But they claimed that the hotel’s response was neither quick nor adequate, which exacerbated the trauma of the incident.
The hotel insisted that its employees had adhered to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and refuted any lack of service. Additionally, it claimed that the room’s internal privacy protections were not in place when the incident was alleged to have occurred.
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Chennai (North), has dismissed the hotel’s justification, noting that the apology letters it released in the wake of the incident acknowledged that the hotel had mishandled the situation, according to media reports.
The Commission ordered the hotel to reimburse the entire room rate of Rs. 55,500, plus interest at 9% annually from the day of occupancy on January 26, 2025, until the sum is realized. Furthermore, the hotel was instructed to pay Rs. 10 lakh in damages for inadequacies in hospitality services as well as for pecuniary related to money or payment and non-pecuniary losses. Rs. 10,000 was also given as a grant for legal expenses.
